White sand and cypress trees at Carmel Beach

Carmel-by-the-Sea, a Short Drive from Pacific Inn

6 Miles | 11 Minutes Drive

Carmel-by-the-Sea is about 11 minutes south of Pacific Inn on Highway 1. The small village is known for its storybook cottages, art galleries, wine tasting rooms, and hidden courtyards, and Ocean Avenue runs downhill through town to Carmel Beach, a wide crescent of white sand.

Make a day of it: browse the shops in the morning, walk the beach, and visit the Carmel Mission on the south side of town. Point Lobos and 17-Mile Drive are both close by, so it is easy to add a scenic drive on the way back to North Fremont Street.

Tips

  • Park once and explore on foot. The village is compact.
  • Many buildings have names instead of street numbers, so use business names in your map app.
  • Carmel Beach is a classic sunset spot. Bring a layer.
